Very interesting an unique Taino humanoid cemi in brown stone.
Its made in a very rigid rectangular shape, it features a human being sitting with folded legs while the arms rest on the knees (what is known as Vajrasana in the yoga world or Seiza in Japanese culture).
It features linear decorations on legs, ribs, back, arms, shoulders, glutes and forehead. It features a detailed navel and a decorated spine with little holes. On the back of the head it features circular designs suggesting mindfulness or thought. A very interesting piece.
Cemis like this one adorned the areas where special rituals and ceremonies took place. A Cemi is a sculpture inhabited by a god, deity or ancestral spirit of the Taino people and used by the shamans to commute with the spirit for guidance. Cemi is also the term used to refer to the deity or ancestral spirit itself.
This piece comes from a Taino antique collector in Puerto Rico.
